There is a moment when nobody wants to type eleven digits: when the car has broken down, when a pipe has burst, when someone is out on the street holding their phone in one hand. The phone QR Code is built for exactly that — scan it, the dialler opens with the number ready, and all that is left is the green button.

How it works

It is the simplest of all the types. The code stores an address in the tel: format followed by the number. Every operating system recognises it and opens the dialler with the number loaded.

The call is never placed automatically. The number appears in the dialler and the person decides whether to call. No system lets a code trigger a call on its own, and that is a good thing.

How to create yours

1. Type the number in international format: the country code, then the area code without a leading zero, then the number.
2. Check the preview — a wrong number here is a call lost forever.
3. Download as SVG for signs, stickers or vehicles; PNG is fine for screen.

For a London number, the correct format is +442079460958. The country code is what guarantees consistent behaviour, including for people scanning with a foreign SIM.

Where this type stands out

Size matters more here than in any other type

Phone codes tend to be read from a distance and in motion — from the pavement, from a car, from inside a lift. It is worth restating the 10-to-1 rule: the side of the code should be at least a tenth of the scanning distance.

On the side of a vehicle, where scanning happens from about 3 metres, that means at least 30 cm. A 10 cm sticker on a van door looks big in your hand and is far too small on the street.

The good news is that phone numbers produce sparse codes with large squares. That makes them, by nature, the easiest of all types to scan — provided they are printed at the right size.

Always print the number in text as well

This is the most important recommendation on this page. Next to the QR Code, write the number in readable text.

People in a hurry often prefer to type. People with a faulty camera, a dirty lens or a dead battery cannot scan at all. And people who simply do not know how to use a QR Code — still a meaningful share of the public — leave without making contact. The code speeds things up for those who want it; the written number works for everyone.

Alternatives depending on your goal

• If you want people to chat rather than call, the WhatsApp QR Code has a better response rate and allows a ready-made message.
• If you want them to save your contact, the contact (vCard) QR Code carries name, phone and email at once.
• If the number changes often, point a link QR Code at a page of yours that displays the current phone number.
